In the summer of 2006 I had the opportunity to see the people from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, KS. They were protesting Billy Graham outside of the Greensboro Coliseum. So John Stickley, Alan Cross and I went over to see and listen to the venom coming out of their mouths. It was horrible to hear the hate coming out of “church” people.
Rather than yell back at them, I wanted to see firsthand why they were so angry. John pulled out his video camera and we walked up to Shirley Phelps-Roper, the daughter of Fred Phelps who started this madness. They love the attention so they gladly agreed to the interview. A local news reporter tried to jump in during my interview. Anyway, I did not argue with her. That was not my reason for being there. I did it so I could see what makes them tick. It was very sad. Caution: Some of her language is crude, cruel and vulgar! This interview broke my heart. Please pray for them.
