In the summer of 2006 I had the opportunity to see the people from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, KS. They were protesting Billy Graham outside of the Greensboro Coliseum. So John Stickley, Alan Cross and I went over to see and listen to the venom coming out of their mouths. It was horrible to hear the hate coming out of “church” people.
Rather than yell back at them, I wanted to see firsthand why they were so angry. John pulled out his video camera and we walked up to Shirley Phelps-Roper, the daughter of Fred Phelps who started this madness. They love the attention so they gladly agreed to the interview. A local news reporter tried to jump in during my interview. Anyway, I did not argue with her. That was not my reason for being there. I did it so I could see what makes them tick. It was very sad. Caution: Some of her language is crude, cruel and vulgar! This interview broke my heart. Please pray for them.

I can sympathize with a heart for revealing people sin in a godly manner, but this is out-right hate-mongering. I get what their trying to do. To be the modern day “prophet” calling out “woes” to the nation.
When we’ve heard them on the campus all they do it yell and try to offend everyone. Not engaging anyone in debate, or most importantly PROCLAIMING THE GOSPEL! The grace of God should be extended to those who sin against Him. Yes God hates sin and the sinner with a holy anger, but the Lord is the one who is to rightly inflict judgement. Like you said in your “Recovering Pharisee” post, “(we need to reproach the wayward sinner).”
Though Christ when he was to reproach the sinner, no matter how harshly, still preached the REPENTANCE and the Grace of God.
I never heard the call to repentance from them, but rather slander, malice, “corrupt speech” or foul language. In as much as it depends on us we should live peaceably with all. The Gospel in itself is offensive enough to the ears of the unregenerate soul.
Convict with compassion for the sinner, know we were no better than them before the Lord plucked us from the fire and we still are filthy sinners though the Lord is gracious enough to convict us to keep us from continuing in our sin without regard for Him.
I’m just unequipped to handle the fact that this group is today in my city doing the same thing about 4 cheerleaders that died in a car crash. They act as though they speak for God. Saying, “GOD HATES TENNESSEE” and “GOD PUNISHED THOSE GIRLS FOR TENNESSEE’S SIN” how do they presume to know these things.
Yes they died for their own sin (maybe not something specific, but because they are sinners they are under the curse of Adam). They were not innocent, their blood atones for nothing. God is calling sinners to repentance and to a realization that death can come at any time and that the time for repentance is now through the death of those girls, but we can not presume to say God killed them for this or that.
Mourn with those that mourn, rejoice with those that rejoice.
Have compassion and sympathy, but also preach the gospel of repentance and belief.

I agree with Stephen and I am sadden by hearing and reading about this family. I was raised in a “strict” home, but never have I heard such hatred spouted out in “God’s Name”. They are truly of the demonic and not of God. God is Love……….Hope……..Beauty, so many things.
Listening to her makes me shutter with anger.
I noticed these videos aren’t visible. Is that anything you can do anything about? Or, are they gone forever??

wow. Did’nt God also say not to curse? I think she broke that already, and if God looks at all sin the same then shes no better right? I would of loved to see you debate her Pastor but I know that wouldn’t of changed her mind
so you got the whole church hating you, you must be doing something right!
Thank you for posting these videos. It is sad that these people are so deluded. It begs the question: What is her/their problem? The Lord’s Prayer sums it up simply and eloquently: “Forgive us our trespasses AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US.” I will pray for this woman because she and her followers really need a LOT of prayer.
This is an irrefutable CLEAR case of child abuse. These videos should be used by Child Protective Services to take that young boy and put him in a loving foster home. Get him away from the verbal abuse of his bio mother screaming, cursing, and the hate speech that is being drilled into him day after day.

This interview is arrogant. Assuming… how can any of us begin to claim or fathom the mystery of I AM. The ONE. Humans are all sinful… off the mark. God is majestic and all knowing. We do not know the last conversation that one has prior to death. Only God plants the seed, waters the seed, awakens the seed and has the power to call. Believing in Jesus and serving in a way without an illumined spirit is manipulative. One who has truly heard the call of Jesus as the Divine and Most High Teacher would never try to second guess or challenge the infinite divine plan of Our Maker. Perhaps stepping away from the scripture and looking at the psycho-spiritual components here can explain something greater. One who is not conscious of one’s hidden shadow components can only reach certain levels. Since we ultimately can only serve one Master and this contract is designed and resurrected in our lives by the one who created the contract, I question the authencity of this person and if she is fortunate there are entities that reside in her that can be cast out by the Almighty one. Christ came for Everyone. He knows our heart and knows our day. He who has not sinned, let him cast the first stone. One cannot not have an awakened heart center and spit out this information. When one is doing their own work and is judging, they must have the courage to ask “what if I am incorrect and off the mark” How will I answer HIM? Why will I tell HIM I was so stuck I could not Serve the lost and the broken. I suspect Christ will wonder why you made it so difficult for HIM and why you didn’t assist HIM in opening eyes that couldn’t see. Innate Harmony, Healing Presence, Compassion, Unconditional Love. If we could get to Heaven through works, Jesus Christ was crucified for nothing. Don’t you believe Matthew Shepard is Christ’s Shepherd for you to open your eyes. Just think for one minute Shirley… What if you are wrong? What will you say to Jesus at the Gates? What legacy do you want to leave? Why not leave a legacy where you convert your congregation to a group of people who serve in the Name of Jesus who can Love and are not so AFRAID. Christ is for Everyone. And it is arrogant for us as simple stupid humans to even begin to think we know how GREAT and VAST HIS LOVE AND POWER IS. God bless you. I am going to pray for you and your family. I am going to pray for the softening of your heart that you will stop travelling all over the place spreading hate and causing people to throw the concept of Jesus out like a old forgotten fairy tale. I have just seen the Laramie Project and to me it is a contemporary reenactment of the Passion of Christ. This explains why people are working and coming in the Name of the Lord rising up against it. It happens that Matthew Shepard was in fact a young gay man however when you see the play, he was a victim of someone else’s unresolved pain or uncontrolled or inhabited dark forces. Why not ask the big question? If during Bible times, the people most feared and considered outcasts were the Lepers and God worked through them to get his message of love and compassion across in the Bible, Why wouldn’t he use a group of folks that are becoming more and more visible in modern day culture to reach us all. True Christian theology … is the promise of the redemptive power of one’s last breath. God sent a doe to rest by Matthew Shepard while he hung on a fence for over 18 hours. The relationship promised by God through the faith and belief in Jesus Christ is the promise of the opening and divine pouring of the power of the most High Holy Spirit and Master Teacher. This relationship is a personal one, highly personal between God and each individual. Powerful, All Knowing, Never Changing and Attached. See the Laramie Project… this is NOT a message for our world only to embrace people because of their sexual orientation, It is a call to shift from the Great One. We best heed…. it is our responsibility. Love in the Name of the Divine Master.

This Southern Baptist Churchianity has created lukewarmness and worse. Since men don’t preach the word any longer and attack sin, “Christians” are speechless and offended when someone dares to speak out in the public square. You ought to be ashamed!
Hooking up the glorious Gospel for filthy lucre is where you have erred. Following the traditions of men, like Graham and this doomed nation’s idols is also where you have erred. Money and the true Gospel does not mix (1 Tim. 6:9,10).
The lady who was with you cared more about the flag than the Bible. How can you defend that? How? Worshipping that dead idol is a sin. If you are not going to stand in the gap for truth no matter what the cost, then get out of the pulpit and don’t call yourself Christian or a pastor. You just got your rear handed to you by a woman who knows the word of God and will not back down one inch from it. She’ll die with the truth! Praise our sovereign God!
That is how we are all supposed to be. Warriors! We are truth warriors and the sword we wield is divine (2 Cor. 10:4,5)! And we use that sword to crush error, falsehood and lies of all kinds. Nothing she said is unbiblical. They make people mad because they speak truth! They are battling error with truth! The word cuts wide open (Heb. 4:12)! You know that! The world will hate you because it first hated HIM! If you are just getting along with everyone just fine and dandy, with all things and all opinions, then you ARE NOT a true man of GOD! Jesus offers peace between man and God through faith in HIS blood, but HE divides households and nations with HIS words. He is a stumbling block and rock of offense. What side are you on? Remember, friendship with the world is ENMITY with God!
Hopefully, this has convicted you to leave false doctrine and start PREACHING THE WORD (2 Tim. 4:2) in it’s glory and fullness. America is perishing and you are delusional if you are not warning men today to flee “from the wrath to come” (1 Thess. 1:10)! God is not mocked! This nation has sewn in sin for way too long and the hour of her demise draws nigh.
Quit worshipping Billy Graham and men and conventions and start following and serving the living Christ! Throw away lifeless religion and repent!

I pray God blesses your ministry. The God I serve loves. The God I serve came to save not condemn. With all due respect I have paid the price more than you will ever know. But nothing compared to what Jesus paid. I’ll chose to love people into the Kingdom. I will answer to God for what I do and I know He is pleased with how I’m living my life today. I’ve had the privilege of “loving” 13 people to Christ in the last month. So if that is wrong then I’m guilty.

Paul condemned all of humanity in the first 3 chapters of Romans…Did he not? Does that mean he did not love men? Definitions are getting in the way. Biblical love is warning all men about the condition of their souls and faithfully preaching the word of God, especially in this lost and apostate nation…with no regard for self or money or reputation or numbers…
How can you take credit for loving people to Christ? That is GOD’S work and HIS alone and it’s all for HIS glory. No man can put his hand on the Ark of God. Remember Uzza? If those 13 people were supernaturally born again, then stand back and PRAISE HIM for it!…Don’t be duped, the scripture says…

With all due respect, I know I’m not the one who brings anyone to Christ. That is the job of the Holy Spirit. But it is up to us to share his love. Jesus came not to condemn. In John 8 Jesus told the woman He didn’t condemn her. He told her to go and sin no more but He loved her first. Yelling and screaming at people just turns them off.

Crazy Christians crack me up!
1. Jesus said “ALL manner of sin is forgiven save one, that is denial of the Holy Sprit.”
ANY sin that we commit is forgiven, if we ask forgiveness.
2. He also said “I will have MERCY and not sacrifice.”
No matter how much money we give the church, it accomplishes nothing for us if we do not show mercy to others, especially those who are grieving the loss of a loved one.
3. AND, ” Judge NOT, lest ye be judged. for however you judge others is how I will judge you.”
4. Lastly, “By thine own tongue thou shalt be justified or condemned.”
This preacher, his congrgation and his family really need to think about these scriptures and what they really mean.
