what God told me

Let me say that I’ve never heard God speak in an audible voice.  For those who have it makes hearing God easier.  But I have heard God speak to me through the years in various ways.  But there have been a few times where God spoke in my mind and heart unmistakably.  Friday at the Leadership Summit was one of those days.

For anyone who has met my wife Cassandra, you know what a special woman she is.  We have a special relationship that I can’t explain.  We are very connected spiritually and emotionally.  She is a gifted person in so many ways. I would dare say that there are people at many of the churches we served that were more upset that she left than me.

Almost everywhere we have served we have served separately.  We served in the same church but we would serve in different areas.  We thought that was OK because we were passionate about jumping in where we were needed.

When I was on staff in Jacksonville, NC I was being stretched in many directions so, Cass jumped in to lead the preschool department.  The personnel committee wanted to hire a full-time person but the pastor said why should we pay someone when we have Cassandra.  I didn’t think it was very funny.

When God called us to plant a church I should have been listening to what God was telling us.  We were assessed for church planting at the North American Mission Board (NAMB) and they told us that I scored well as a church planter but they gave us the highest rank you could get as a couple.  But we have never served in the same area together.

Then we interviewed with a mega church in Greensboro, NC a few years ago and the Executive Pastor couldn’t get over how well we worked together.   Later that summer we talked to another mega church in Austin, TX about starting a church with them.  During one of the interviews the Lead Pastor couldn’t stop smiling as he watched Cassandra and me talk.  He finally stopped and said you two are very connected.  He said he had never seen such a connection.  We laughed it off but have never served together in the same area.

Last year when we resigned our former church one of the reasons we decided to leave is that we wanted to serve as a family and not be divided on Sundays.  But again, each Sunday, I go one way and Cassandra goes another.

Friday Cassandra was at home dealing with the AC people and I was telling our worship leader about it.  I joked and said they don’t want to mess with Cassandra because the Social Worker comes out in her and she is a bulldog when it comes to advocating for others –now she is advocating for us.  Susan made some comment about how talented Cassandra is and so did Lynn our other staff member.  Our pastor made a comment last week about how gifted Cassandra was as he watched her greeting people at a church event. Yet again, we weren’t serving together.

A few years ago Cassandra was over working in her volunteering so I tried to rescue her.  But I’ll never forget what she told me.

She said, “have you ever thought that God has called me too?”

Wow, she was right.  Whenever she speaks she speaks with power.  She has a gift to speak to women.  She has them listening and before long they are in tears.  I joke and tell her she is “Beth Moore.”  She doesn’t like that. But she is that gifted.

So all of this is to tell you what God told me on Friday.  But really He has been telling me this for at least 10 years.  He told me while I was listening to Bill Hybels and then a video they showed at the Leadership Summit called “Here am I send me.”  What did God tell me?

God said, “You and Cassandra are to be doing ministry together.”

Now I don’t know what this all means.  It won’t happen today or tomorrow. It may be a few years away.  But I heard God loud and clear. We are so much more effective (at least I am) when we work together. So I’m ready to see what God is going to do with all of this.

20 Years…

20 Years ago today, Cassandra Frazier of Scottsboro, AL became Cassandra Bussey.  I’m amazed at what our life has brought us.  I’ll never forget the 1st time I met her. I knew who she was when she attended Samford but never got to know her.  When she transfered to UAB she lived in the same apartment complex as my former roommate and Frat brother, Ramsay. I was at Ramsay’s apartment one night for a birthday party and Cassandra came over.  I remember talking to her for several hours and wanting to ask her out for a date. But Ramsay and his dental student buddies were notorious for pulling pranks on their friends when they went on dates so I didn’t want to blow any chance I had with Cassandra.   Thankfully for me Ramsay moved a month later.  :)

Cassandra’s roommate/best friend, Tonya was dating and eventually married Dr. Rob Jackson who was my new roommate and one of my best friends.  They really wanted Cassandra and I to get together and made some excuses why they needed Cassandra and I to go with them to talk.  I knew what Rob was up to but Cassandra didn’t.  Anyway, I asked her out the next day and we’ve been together ever since then–2 years of dating/engagement and 20 years of marriage.

Cassandra is an angel.  She has been with me when I had a tragic car accident.  We had the honeymoon from hades and she still loves me.  She thought she was marrying a high school football coach and I pulled a bait and switch.  She has stood by me when I left coaching to enter business.  We moved to Ft. Worth and she put me through Seminary.  We lived through 7 hurricanes on two coasts including Katrina.  She has supported me through the risks I’ve taken like starting a church.  I should have trusted her instincts about some places but I’m kind of naive.  We lived through a few church splits, a drastic pay cut–involuntary, resignation and a voluntary pay cut.

We have 2 healthy children who she has homeschooled for most of their schooling.  She is the best listener I’ve ever been around.  Ask anyone who knows her.  If you met her today she would make you feel like you have known her your entire life and would probably tell her everything about yourself.  That is the kind of person she is.  She doesn’t want anyone to recognize her but she realizes that God has a calling on her life too!  She is an amazing, Godly woman and I am truly blessed.  I know she hates it but she really is a Proverbs 31 woman.

Thanks for 20 years Cass!  I pray God gives us many more.

Happy Birthday to Cassandra

Today is the birthday of a special woman.  My wife Cassandra is celebrating another year of life.  I am so blessed to have such a Godly woman as my best friend and wife.  She is a super help to me in every area of my life.  We just spent the weekend on a marriage retreat and will be celebrating 20 years of marriage this June.  I’m grateful to God for sending her in my life.  I love you!

Scary stuff

Filed under police, scary, theft, wife

Tonight I was at a wedding rehearsal so I didn’t have my Treo on me.  My beautiful wife Cassandra was suppose to meet me @ 7:00PM for the rehearsal dinner.  I was told by my son that Cass was trying to get me on the phone so I went to my office to grab my Treo.  When I called Cass told me that she had just been attacked at the Wal-Mart by our home.   She went in to get a few things and was walking around the back of the Chrysler Town & Country when a man grabbed her leg and told her to give him the keys!

Cassandra is a very observant person and had just seen a police officer pull in the parking lot and was maybe 6 cars away.  So she kicked the perpetrator in the face and yelled for help.  Charlotte’s finest was there immediately and put Cass in his car and chased the thief down and caught him.  Wow!

This is the 2nd time this has happened to Cass.  In 1992 we were living in Ft. Worth, TX while I was in seminary.  Cass was coming home to our apartment on the East side of Ft. Worth by I-30 & I-820.  I normally wasn’t home on Monday nights because of a class but this night I was home sooner than normal.  Cassandra pulled into our gated apartment community and 2 gang members were waiting for her and attacked her and drove off in our car.

I just praise God that he protected Cassandra back then and tonight.  I also thank God for our police officers who don’t get enough praise for protecting our community.
