Fox News’ Brit Hume leaving for family, religion

Filed under media, news, testimony, tv

[Reuters & LA Times]

After 12 years at Fox News Channel and four decades in the news business, Washington managing editor Brit Hume will leave “Special Report” and daily journalism for a quieter life, spending time with his grandchildren and following his Christian faith (the anchor still will contribute to the network as a political analyst).

As he prepares to anchor his last presidential campaign, Hume said he’s eager to immerse himself in a more spiritual life after dwelling for so long in the secular. The anchor described himself as a “nominal Christian” until 10 years ago, when his son Sandy committed suicide at age 28.

“I feel like I was really kind of saved when my son died by faith and by the grace of God, and that’s very much on my consciousness,” said Hume, who plans to get more involved in his wife’s Bible study group.

[From me]

I hate that he is leaving for the very reason he is a believer.  Now I realize why I always liked watching him. It is sad that it took the tragedy of his son to shake up his faith but that happens a lot. It is interesting how God invites people to Himself after they have gone through horrible things like what Brit and his wife went through. It is great to hear that his faith caused him to leave. I wish more people took their faith that seriously.  I hate that we are losing an objective voice in the media.

Who will have the last laugh?

[NY Times]

Arjun N. Murti remembers the pain of the oil shocks of the 1970s. But he is bracing for something far worse now: He foresees a “super spike” — a price surge that will soon drive crude oil to $200 a barrel.

Mr. Murti, who has a bit of a green streak, is not bothered much by the prospect of even higher oil prices, figuring it might finally prompt America to become more energy efficient. An analyst at Goldman Sachs, Mr. Murti has become the talk of the oil market by issuing one sensational forecast after another. A few years ago, rivals scoffed when he predicted oil would breach $100 a barrel. Few are laughing now. Oil shattered yet another record on Tuesday, touching $129.60 on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gas at $4 a gallon is arriving just in time for those long summer drives.

Mr. Murti, 39, argues that the world’s seemingly unquenchable thirst for oil means prices will keep rising from here and stay above $100 into 2011. Others disagree, arguing that prices could abruptly tumble if speculators in the market rush for the exits. But the grim calculus of Mr. Murti’s prediction, issued in March and reconfirmed two weeks ago, is enough to give anyone pause: in an America of $200 oil, gasoline could cost more than $6 a gallon.

[From me]

Today I drove my new Honda Scooter to work.  Yes, I’m sure there are those who think I’m crazy.  I’m sure there were some who passed me that think I’m driving a DUI scooter.  (I don’t drink)  I would rather drive my car any day.  But with gas going to unthinkable prices I wonder who will have the last laugh?

What will you do if gas goes to $6-7 a gallon?

Progressive? Insurance invaded church members’ private sessions

[AJC]

When a new couple arrived at Southside Christian Fellowship Church in August 2005, members welcomed them with open arms. Soon, the new couple talked their way into private group support sessions in the Stockbridge home of church member Ken King.

During the private talks, church members confessed abortions, sexual orientation issues, drug addictions and other dark secrets.

No one knew the couple wasn’t actually interested in joining the church. Instead, they were private investigators hoping two church members, Bill and Leandra Pitts, would spill something they could use to discredit the pair in an ongoing lawsuit over a traffic accident.

The private eyes even tape-recorded the sessions. A lawsuit was filed last week in Fulton County State Court names Wisconson-based Progressive Northern Insurance Co., their lawyers and James Purgason Jr. and Paige Weeks of Merlin Investigations as defendants.

Read about it here.

[From me]

Wow! I always wondered how they could quote prices of other companies. Maybe the infiltrate those companies just like they did this church. I’m sorry but this is wrong at many levels. There were innocent people pouring out their lives at this meeting and the PI’s taped their confessions. I’d be angry too!

I guess the law doesn" />#8217;t apply to Planned Parenthood.  Sad, millions of innocent babies are killed every year.

Do superstar pastors help or hurt faith communities?

Filed under Christian, church, news, religion, trends

As ghastly as the Ted Haggard party-and-pray scandal was, observers say his megachurch had far better ethical oversight than others.

Pastor Ted’s influence was felt everywhere in New Life Church: in the videos shown at worship; in the New Life bookstore, which stocked books he recommended; and in the story of the church itself. He started New Life in his basement, building it into a 14,000-member nationally known megachurch. As the Rev. Ted Haggard’s fortunes rose, so did the church’s.

So when Haggard fell spectacularly from grace in a scandal involving drugs and allegations of gay sex, many wondered if New Life, so tied to his public persona, would crash with him.

The answer has significance far beyond the Haggard tragedy. As evangelical megachurches have sprung up around the country, concerns have grown over whether superstar pastors help or hurt faith communities.

Read about it here.

I have been wondering this for years. I love hearing Andy Stanley, Ed Young Jr., Bill Hybels and others speak. I am amazed at what God is doing in their churches. But I’ve wonder–what if–something happened to them –death, scandal or something else. What would happen to these churches? Are they personality driven or God driven?

I praise God for the lives that are changed because of their ministries. I was at a Atlanta Falcons game an few years ago and overheard a young lady talking about the Impact of Northpoint Community Church on her life. She was a very unchurched person who God got a hold of.

I was in Chicago on a mission trip a few years ago and a lady introduced herself to me and said she “was a full devoted follower of Christ.” Obviously Willowcreek has made a difference in her life.

But now these churches are starting “video venues” 1000’s of miles away from the home church. I don’t know what to think. Those men are awesome speakers and they minister to me. But what happens –God forbid–if something were to happen to these high profile pastors?

I don’t have the answers, but I have a lot of questions.

What do you think?
