Children on Richard Dawkins’ atheist ads are from evangelical family

Published by Kevin Bussey under atheists, ironic

[Times Online]

The two children chosen to front Richard Dawkins’s latest assault on God could not look more free of the misery he associates with religious baggage. With the slogan “Please don’t label me. Let me grow up and choose for myself”, the youngsters with broad grins seem to be the perfect advertisement for the new atheism being promoted by Professor Dawkins and the British Humanist Association.

Except that they are about as far from atheism as it is possible to be. The Times can reveal that Charlotte, 8, and Ollie, 7, are from one of the country’s most devout Christian families.

Their father, Brad Mason, is something of a celebrity within evangelical circles as the drummer for the popular Christian musician Noel Richards. Now a web designer and photographer, Mr Mason has been supplementing his income for years by providing photographs to agencies who sell them on to newspapers and advertising campaigns.

He said: “It is quite funny, because obviously they were searching for images of children that looked happy and free. They happened to choose children who are Christian. It is ironic. The humanists obviously did not know the background of these children.”

[From me]

Yeah, those Christian kids are so abused! Maybe, just maybe living a Christian life does lead to happiness and contentment. :)

Alice Cooper banned from gig on religious grounds’

Published by Kevin Bussey under banned, ironic

[Digital Spy]

Alice Cooper has been forced to scrap a forthcoming gig in Finland after the venue’s owners reportedly objected to his controversial stage show on “religious grounds”.

According to Contactmusic, the ‘School’s Out’ rocker was due to play the Tampere Areena on December 11, but officials have subsequently declared that the concert conflicted with their “Christian-based policies”. Venue boss Harri Wiherkoski has since confirmed the cancellation and attributed the move to objections from other clients who use the arena.

Gig promoter Kalle Keskinen, who helped organise the show, admitted that he was shocked by the reaction, telling Finland’s YLE News: “[Several religious groups] and others use Tampere Areena for their events, so the venue’s management did not want Alice Cooper appearing in the same hall. The contract which we received from Tampere Areena specifies that no artists may perform there who ‘incite evil and the power of darkness’.

“We never imagined that a rock veteran who has performed in Finland in four separate decades without any problems and who has spoken in public of his own religious convictions would not be allowed to perform at Tampere Areena in 2009.”

[From me]

This is pretty funny coming from Finland. Alice Cooper is a believer and gives lots of money to his church and a Baptist college in Arizona.

New Miss California Also Against Gay Marriage

Published by Kevin Bussey under homosexuality, honesty, ironic

[CBS Denver]

Miss California USA’s executive director says the pageant would never try to silence new titleholder Tami Farrell’s stance against gay marriage.

Keith Lewis told The Associated Press on Friday that he wants all of the beauty contestants he deals with to be able to voice their opinions as long as they don’t violate their contracts.

Former Miss California USA Carrie Prejean, who was given a second chance earlier, lost her title Wednesday after Lewis said she skipped pageant events while speaking out against gay marriage during unsanctioned appearances.

In a television interview Thursday, Farrell said she believed marriage should be between a man and a woman. But she added: “I don’t think I have the right or anybody has the right to tell somebody who they can or can’t love.”

[From me]

Kind of ironic that the fired the former Miss California for the same opinion.

Clinton urges monogamy Health services key to AIDS fight

Published by Kevin Bussey under ironic, monogamy

[The Spec]

Bill Clinton made a plea yesterday for a new emphasis on monogamy as a key element in the battle against AIDS. The former U.S. president, not noted for his ability to keep his own marriage vows, said it was very important to change people’s attitudes to sex.

In an interview with the BBC, recorded in Africa, Clinton told his interviewer that increasing support for monogamy was not just a problem for the continent worst hit by AIDS, but for the world.

“To pretend we can ever get hold of this without dealing with that — the idea of unprotected sexual relations with unlimited numbers of partners — I think would be naive.”

[From me]

Mr. Clinton I find it refreshing that I agree with you.  I’m glad you came to that conclusion.  You could make quite an impact on so many people.

Smoking gets an “R” rating!

[From Washington Post]

Would “Casablanca” have been rated XXX?

Depictions of smoking in movies will now be a factor when deciding what a film’s rating will be, possibly making a PG-13 movie R-rated, the Motion Picture Association of America said yesterday. The policy affects only new movies.

Along with violence, depictions of sex, adult language and other content considerations, ratings organizations will examine new releases to determine if they glamorize smoking or if it is pervasive through the films, even among adults. Underage smoking has always been considered when rating a film.

Read about it here.

[From me]

I certainly don’t like smoking. It kills people and is a bad habit. But you have to be kidding me! So if a movie like Atlantis shows that lady saying “we’re all going to die” with the cig in her mouth it gets an “R” rating?

Why don’t they go after the real ills of our country like immoral sexual content and perversion? Hollywood just doesn’t get it.

What do you think?
