kids’ camp to groom atheists

GIVE Richard Dawkins a child for a week’s summer camp and he will try to give you an atheist for life.

The author of The God Delusion is helping to launch Britain’s first summer retreat for non-believers, where children will have lessons in evolution and sing along to John Lennon’s Imagine.

The five-day camp in Somerset (motto: “It’s beyond belief”) is for children aged eight to 17 and will rival traditional faith-based breaks run by the Scouts and church groups.

Budding atheists will be given lessons to arm themselves in the ways of rational scepticism. There will be sessions in moral philosophy and evolutionary biology along with more conventional pursuits such as trekking and tug-of-war. There will also be a £10 prize for the child who can disprove the existence of the mythical unicorn.

Instead of singing Kumbiya and other campfire favourites, they will sit around the embers belting out “Imagine there’s no heaven . . . and no religion too”.

Camp? Isn’t that what TV is for?

What do you think?

They really tip their hand with the unicorn bit. I ignore atheists who try to equate the evidence for God (see http://rationalperspective.wordpress.com/theism/ for starters) with the evidence for unicorns, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, etc.. It shows that they have such poor criticial thinking skills or are so blinded by their worldview that they think that is a serious argument.

I have no issue with people advancing their worldview, though Dawkins et al don’t feel that way. They think it is child abuse to teach your religion to your children. Religious freedom is anathema to them, which is ironic considering that in their worldview all religions are the product of pure materialism. You see, I just “think” that I see all this evidence for the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, but their “truth” is that it is just a function of macro-evolution. Sure.

I want to go! Then I can disprove everything they teach, Ive been watching this guy alot online lately and its sad that people believe him, actually watching one of his vids when you posted this.
I believe the bible also says that if someone offends a child then it would be better for him to strap a millstone around his neck and be drowned in the depths of the sea
I think forcing kids to believe there is no God is a big offense.

I assume it goes without saying that you all think this is much better, yes? http://bit.ly/14LNcR
In my humble opinion, it’s far more terrifying than anything camp quest can hope to impact on such an impressionable audience.
There is nothing forceful about atheist teaching, it merely offers a completely pro-choice alternative to organised religion, and ultimately stimulates a healthy attitude towards better understanding of our existence; something which I feel outdated religious teachings have failed and are otherwise incapable of doing. What you are doing is allowing mass censorship of information considered fact by the educated amongst us, which in my opinion is a far greater offense. There is no reason for children, or anyone to believe in god other than an attempt justify their otherwise meaningless existence; something which I feel confident myself and own potential children will have no problem coming to terms with.
Disprove? I highly doubt it. You are fighting a lost battle.
