Crystal Cathedral TV preacher removed by father

Schuller and son in 2006

[LA Times]

The Rev. Robert H. Schuller removed his son Saturday as preacher on the syndicated “Hour of Power” television show less than three years after handing over to him the ministry he began more than 50 years ago. Schuller announced the removal of his son, Robert A. Schuller, in a statement read to some 450 Crystal Cathedral congregants by Jim Coleman, the church’s president.

“It is no secret to any of you that my son, Robert, and I have been struggling as we each have different ideas as to the direction and the vision for this ministry,” his statement read.

“For this lack of shared vision and the jeopardy in which this is placing this entire ministry, it has become necessary for Robert and me to part ways.”

Schuller said he was bringing in several guest pastors from around the country to preach during the show, which has been cut to half an hour in some markets since summer.
The decision marks a surprising reversal of the emotional moment when Schuller turned over the church ministries and the television program to his son during services at the Crystal Cathedral in January 2006. The two men hugged and the elder Schuller fought tears as he addressed his congregants.

At the time, though, he made it clear: “I am not retiring.”

[From me]

I guess Robert shouldn’t be expecting a Father’s Day Card.:)

There has to be more to this story. You don’t just fire your own son for a slight difference of opinion.

What do you think?

I’ve never heard the son preach. I know the elder Schuller preaches a false new-agey Gospel. So did the son preach a gospel even more false, or did he preach the real thing and that offended his dad?

    It’s the fulfillment of prophesy!

The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father

I’m curious…did any of us even notice they had cut back to 1/2 hour?

Maybe the son needs to think more positively :)

YIKES….that’s just wrong! I’m not a fan of their ministry, but this is so prideful. I think it reveals that ministry was built on a man, instead of the God-Man, Jesus Christ. Yes, I said it.

    Love ya’ll!

Maybe they should re-read the story of the prodigal son…wonder, could there be a message in there for this family?

I guess I could return and preach there like I did in 1997. You think I am kidding, I do have a picture of me standing in the pulpit of the CC in January 1997. Of course the only people there were 10 classmates and one professor, Dan Crawford, from SWBTS.

    I’d like to see that!

If anyone has anything derogatory to say about someone that has made such a difference in the world and in mine, please state what your accomplishments are what what the person in question has said that you perceive as false. Also, how spreading discord and negativity is in alignment with what Jesus teaches. Are you in the business of building up the body or tearing it down. It was because of the Crystal Cathedral that I have come to know Jesus personally and have grown deep in the faith. If what you have learned is so effective, why are you sewing such bad seeds. The cool thing is that you can draw the line here and start making a difference yourself. I hope that you choose to achieve greatness…then someday we shall meet.

    LD,

I’m glad to hear that Dr. S had an impact on your life. I didn’t trash him but just wondered “humorously” that it sure can’t be fun in their family.

I wouldn’t fire my son unless there was immorality & that must not be the case because the younger Dr. S is still Sr. Pastor.

There has to be more to this story.

    Kevin,

We just moved a few months ago and I am not sure where the pic is, but if I run across it I will scan it and either send you a copy or post it to my blog or facebook. The only problem is that when the pic was taken I had hair, now I am bald. Sometimes I miss my hair.

A cross between Norman Vincent Peale and Joel Osteen….man-empowered…blatant hedonism and self-serving ,and NOT Christo-Centric ( SR)….Junior tried to apply Scripture, but my opinion is that Dad thought that reading the BIBLE would divide the congregation and diminish it (and the income). As some of the other posts have suggested, there certainly may be more involved than meets the eye, and, like politics,we very rarely will ever get the real truth(s) about the REAL reason(s) for the ouster of son by the dad. Sad.

Robert A (the son) had a much stornger Biblical perspective even saying not long ago, “Like my father I believe in the power of positive thinking, but it is not thinking in and of yourself but in the Holy Spirit”. When those words were spoken I said to my wife, “it will just be a matter of time before the son is let go”. The son has even given alter calls during a service! Something I personally never saw the father do. Interesting to see how this will spin out and where the son may go.

I don’t know . . . my heart aches for it all. I’ve watched them for years and visited the CC as a child in the drive-in days. It is so perplexing to see the Sr.’s positive message fleshed out like this. I love them both and I too believe there is more to this than any of us possibly know. My prayers are with each party as they carry on. I don’t know how Jr. can stay at the CC in that climate, however. How painful and difficult church life can be. . . . .

All that positive preaching has gone up in smoke! The Senior Schuller has in one swell swoop displayed more negativity and discord towards the Younger Schuller. The Son brought New Hope to that ministry with his warmly Evangelical Messages and Altar Calls. Which if the truth be told, made the Father uncomfortable. Now that we heard from the Father, let’s get the Son’s side of the story! I doubt that the “Hour of Power” will survive to offer their 40th Christmas Ornament with the way things are going!
