Is this racist?

Posted at 1:00 pm under Political Correctness, politics, prejudice, racism

[My Fox Orlando]

She’s only 12 years old but Ashleigh Jones is feeling the heat of this election year.  That’s because the seventh grader at New Smyrna Beach Middle School was called a racist by classmates for wearing a pro-Sarah Palin t-shirt.  Jones is volunteering at the Republican Headquarters in New Smyrna Beach. The Palin t-shirt was a gift from her fellow volunteers.

“Some of the students were calling me racist because I was Caucasian,” she said. “I wanted the Caucasian man to win. And I told them that’s not true. It’s my freedom of speech, it’s my opinion.”

Read about it here.

[From me]

I’m hoping this is just a bunch of misguided kids.  But I have a feeling this is going on with adults too on “BOTH SIDES.”  I’m sure there are some who won’t vote for Obama because he is African-American. I guess one could argue that not voting for Palin makes one “sexist.”  This is stupid. I hope we get beyond this.

What do you think?

The Obama camp and the liberals just took a page out of the pro-gay agenda playbook. Demonize, demonize, demonize anyone who disagrees with you. People don’t like to be called racist or intolerant regardless of how ridiculous the charges are, so they say things like they did to this girl.

    Disgusting!

Get beyond it? Not a chance. Not even Christ-followers who should be are. It would be nice and in a perfect world we would be beyond it. I was talking to some man (randomly at the BMV) and he said he was a life-long Dem but would not vote for that “colored” man. I will be so glad when this garbage is all over.

It is sad to see these sorts of attacks, especially on kids. The charge of racism is one of the most serious accusations that can be made in our society today. That’s because racism is (and should be) something that our society does not tolerate. However, the charge of racism, just like charges of, say–molesting a child–can and often will destroy the reputation and credibility of the one against whom the charges are made. These are the nukes of public discourse. They are (at least to some) weapons of last resort (or mass destruction). They will obliterate the reputation of the ones they’re used against. It’s too bad people tend to toss these nukes around — they destroy people, and eventually charges like racism, if casually (and frequently) made, will begin to be ignored and lose their power. Then what do you do with those who really are racist?

There are plenty of people who will say that voting for Palin is not voting for women. There were ton of people who wanted to vote for Hilliary because she was a woman. (IMHO, doing so is just as wrong)
It is hard to understand why there are pockets in the country that still can’t look beyond race. This is true for the inner city, the rural country side, and my own neighborhood. The reporters probably would not ask those saying the 12yr old is racist if they are voting for Obama because he is black.
