What’s got Bill Maher’s drawers in a wad?

Posted at 4:00 am under anger, movies, religion

[Salon]

What if there was a religion, asks comedian Bill Maher, in which an all-powerful god from outer space decided to send his unborn son on a suicide mission to planet Earth? So this space-god impregnates a human female in some mystical, not-quite-physical fashion, and she gives birth to a baby who is both a human being and a divine incarnation, simultaneously the space god’s spawn and the space god himself. (Oh, space god also has a third manifestation, one that’s totally invisible.) So space-god junior is born on Earth destined to be killed, even though he’s a space god and therefore immortal.

As you’ve picked up by now, the religion Maher is describing is not imaginary, and in various forms and guises is professed by most people in the United States, including every president we’ve ever had or are likely to have in the foreseeable future. (I’m sorry, that’s right — one of this year’s candidates is a Muslim.) In the acerbic late-night talk-show host’s new movie ”Religulous, made with “Borat” director Larry Charles, Maher keeps bludgeoning you with stories like these to make the point that the central story behind mainstream Christianity, when considered at face value and taken literally, sounds every bit as loony as the oft-derided tenets of Mormonism or Scientology.

[From me]

Maher has some major issues.  Does he find anything in the US or religion worthy ever?  At the bottom of the article there is an interview with him and he is just a rude, angry man.  I would like to know what happened to him in regards to Christianity that he hates it so much.  What he needs is a good dose of Jesus.

What do you think?

He’s a bitter man, and responding to his vitriolic rhetoric only fuels his twisted views. I agree that he needs a good dose of Jesus, but we’ll have to leave that up to our sovereign God — I doubt apologetics would have an impact on Maher!

I quit paying attention to him years ago, which reduced my blood pressure quite a bit!

I think you’re right. He is an angry angry fellow. I too wonder what has made him so angry?

I would probably give his opinions a little more thought if he didn’t espouse them in such a vitriolic way. Does he really think his type of commentary will change minds? Most people either love him or hate him. I don’t think there are a lot of fence sitters when it comes to agreeing with Maher.

If one decides that, for them, there is absolutely no evidence of any kind of God and is truly content with that, I don’t understand why they must be on a crusade to insult those that do not believe as they do. I am afraid that many Christians do similar things, but why can we not live our faith authentically and respect the work that God is doing in another’s life without insulting where they are? Deeply saddening to me the depth of Bill’s anger and hatred.

P.S. I really don’t understand why people keep saying Barak Obama is a Muslim. I have a very good friend who grew up with Barak and can give first-hand evidence of his experience of Barak as a Christian person.

Drawers in a wad?? I wonder if that means “knickers in a twist”? :) Anyway, who’s the Muslim candidate?
