Barred from Saddleback?
[AJC]
Barack Obama and John McCain are scheduled to make a joint appearance Saturday at Saddleback Church in Orange County, Calif.
No other candidates have been invited, which has ticked off Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr.Russ Verney, campaign manager for the former Georgia congressman, has just sent out a mass e-mail saying Barr will seek a court order to require the church to invite him, too.
Which perhaps is an odd thing for a Libertarian to do — asking a judge to determine whom a church should invite into its sanctuary.

[From me]
Bob Barr used to be my congressman. He lived in a subdivision down the street from us in Canton, GA. I saw him at a Starbucks in Town Lake and introduced myself to him. No kidding, he sent me a card later that week. I always liked him. But when did he become a Libertarian?
Do you think he should have been invited? I wonder if he considers $150K middle class like one candidate did last night. If that is middle class then I’m in the lower third!
What do you think?

From an equality sense, yes, he should have been invited. From a realistic point of view, no. I very well may vote for the man, but he isn’t anywhere near the caliber of those other two gentlemen.

I thought the 150,000 response was pretty funny. I guess that means there are many poor, poor Americans. I wonder what he thinks “lower middle” class is?

150k could well be middle class depending on where you live. Have you tried to buy a house in Southern California?
Barr became Libertarian when he decided to run for president and couldn’t get the republican nomination.

I think you really need to have a reasonable shot at being elected to be considered a contender. So I’m with Rick on this one. Loved the forum last night. Solidified the whole thing for me.

Dear America:
I think Libertarians are great. But let’s be real. Never gonna happen.
Not relevant.
Do something else.

Kevin…Bear Bryant still have a better chance of getting elected than does a Libertarian! Should he have been invited to the forum?

I had a good experience with Barr as well. I was doing a research paper on Ralph Reed while in college and wanted an interview with someone from Georgia that had used Reed’s consulting services. I picked up the phone, called Barr’s office, left a message, and he promptly called me back and talked to me for 30 minutes.
He’s always been a Republican with Libertarian tendencies. After the Dems redistricted in 02, Barr got stuck in a district with another fellow Republican, John Linder. Ultimately, he got thumped in that primary election. Interesting fact is that the Georgia Libertarian Party helped defeat Barr in the Republican Primary by running television ads criticizing his opposition to medical marijuana. I must admit that it’s kinda odd to have a guy running as a Libertarian who once worked to completely ban the use of medical marijuana. For a libertarian, he’s not big on “freedom.” Read his Wikipedia entry. He’s changed many of his positions to become a Libertarian.

BDW,
Thanks for the reminder about Linder. I forgot about that. I still have Barr’s letter. Pretty cool. Plus he likes Starbucks!

ANY third, fourth or fifth party candidate is to be welcomed in this and all future elections. Personally, I am frustrated with always having to choose the lesser of two evils. Give me a chance at the lesser of five evils for a change.

I’m still laughing at the irony of the Libertarian candidate demanding that the government coerce a private religious organization (AKA a church) to include him in the candidate forum.
