Can religion can solve conflicts in world?

Posted at 4:00 am under conflict, pope, war

[Belfast Telegraph]

Well the Pope thinks so. Pope Benedict XVI says religion can solve conflicts in a world threatened by “sinister and indiscriminate forms of violence”.

The 81-year-old pontiff was speaking during his visit to Australia as part of the Catholic Church’s World Youth Day event.

He said religion was a “fundamental right” of all people that could “resolve conflicts through peaceful means and with full regard for human dignity”.

Story here.

[From me]

I don’t mean to be disrespectful but I think the Pope is misguided.  Religion will never solve conflicts.  In fact it will probably cause more conflicts than it will solve.  Even Christian groups can’t get along.  I believe the only time we will see no conflict is after Jesus returns.

What do you think?

    Me thinks the Pope…is wrong.

You, Kevin, hit the nail on the head. I honestly believe that the second coming of Christ will be the only thing that brings about peace.

We are fooling ourselves if we think that any human effort will bring peace. As you said K, even Christ’s followers can’t get along. how in the world can we expect those with divergent views to agree? As if a Muslim, Jew and a Christian can do that. Ain’t going to happen! Only when Jesus returns will we see that.

I agree Kevin. It brings more conflict than it resolves.

He was correct about it being a fundamental right, but thinking that it would end conflicts is naive. He knows better, especially with respect to Islam. It started by the sword and spread by the sword, and keeps people trapped with the sword. It doesn’t understand the concept of resolving conflicts through peaceful means.
