Saudi king appeals for tolerance

[BBC]
King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has called on followers of the world’s main religions to turn away from extremism and embrace a spirit of reconciliation. The king was opening a conference in Madrid which brings together Muslims, Christians, Jews and Buddhists.
He said the great conflicts of history were not caused by religion, but by the misinterpretation of religion.
King Juan Carlos of Spain, the co-host, said Spain had always sought to promote international dialogue.
Critics have dismissed the gathering as a propaganda gimmick by the Saudis who, they say, are not best placed to host a meeting on religious tolerance.

[From me]
Well the critics may be right but I’ll give the King the benefit of the doubt. I think he makes a great point. It isn’t religion that causes wars. It is people who take their views to extremes. We need to get along and allow people to worship how they want to. I may not like a religion but people are free to believe it if they want to without worrying about their lives.
What do you think?

I think America shows that tolerance to a “T” even to our detriment sometimes. I believe Mr. Saudi King ought to practice his own medicine. How many Christ-followers have been jailed and executed in his own country let alone the other Arab nations?

Based on the extensive research I’ve done on life in the Middle East while completing my doctorate, I’ll believe it when I see it. Saudi Arabia is one of the worst in the region regarding human rights and religious freedom. Until the king actually makes changes within his country, all this talk rings hollow.
As my mother often said, our talk and our action need to match up!
Mr. Saudi King…close your mouth and start changing your actions. Let Christians live in Saudi Arabia…let the Christ followers out of jail! Let the Word of God freely come to your country.
Then, and only then, will I believe your words!

I think it’s great that the King is willing to speak of tolerance and reconciliation. I agree too that if he were serious, he’d put his money where his mouth is. I don’t believe he will though, because he values his life and his throne.
