Christian ends Bible giveaways on school grounds

Public schools in Somerset County, MD will no longer allow the Gideons on school grounds to distribute Bibles.
For years, The Gideons, an international Christian organization, has been passing out Bibles to interested fifth-graders. But Stephanie Kayhan says when she moved to the county three years ago, she was shocked by the Bible distribution.
Kayhan says she is a practicing Christian, but she is against Bibles being passed out on school grounds because it blurs the line between church and state. She contacted the American Civil Liberties Union. The ACLU then wrote a letter to the school board, stating that the distribution was unconstitutional.
About the Bibles, she said: “I don’t have a problem with them, I have a problem with them being in the schools.
Supporters of the Bible giveaways say no child was ever forced to take one.
[From me]
I remember getting my Gideon Bible when I was in 5th grade. No one forced me to take it. I don’t get why a Christian woman would go to this extreme.
What do you think?

Three reasons come to my mind: fame, notoriety or stupidity. She, like a whole host of others, has no clue what the real meaning of separation of church and state is all about. For a better understanding of that click on the second “here” above and then click on “Whence Independence” by Pat Boone (right column under commentaries). I have to admit Kevin that I am not surprise by something like this. Too many who call themselves “Christians” are clueless.

How about she has the right as a Christian to see that not just the letter, but the intent of the law is enforced? Or maybe she has the foresight to see that if Gideons can pass out Bibles then what is to stop those pesky Mormons from passing out the book of Mormon, or those completely terrorizing Muslims from passing out the Koran, or those crazy Krishna dudes from passing out the Bhagavad-gita, or those horrible satanists from passing out the Harry Potter series..uh I mean the Satanic Bible, or the students from passing out from carrying all these religious books around…or maybe she IS just clueless. What? She’s your family. I don’t have any problem with y’all making fun of each other. (grin)

I don’t mind the gideon guys. I don’t like the idea of people handing out copies of the watchtower, the book of mormon, or dianetics in public schools. Since I don’t want those folks to hand out their books, it doesn’t hardly seem fair to give access to the gideons.
I’ll be honest, I don’t mind some of the court decision and legislation that legally separates church from state. However, I think this is overboard. Those distributing Bibles were not asked to do so by the school, therefore, I don’t know how we can call this a violation of the First Amendment. If the school had asked them to come do such a thing, then I would have a problem from a Constitutional perspective, but this is just more ACLU pettiness.
