He said what?

Posted at 2:00 pm under Mormons, heresy

If you don’t want to watch then read here:

WALLACE: And what about Mitt Romney? And I’ve got to ask you the question, because it is a question whether it should be or not in this campaign, is a Mormon a true Christian?

OSTEEN: Well, in my mind they are. Mitt Romney has said that he believes in Christ as his savior, and that’s what I believe, so, you know, I’m not the one to judge the little details of it. So I believe they are.

And so, you know, Mitt Romney seems like a man of character and integrity to me, and I don’t think he would — anything would stop me from voting for him if that’s what I felt like.

WALLACE: So, for instance, when people start talking about Joseph Smith, the founder of the church, and the golden tablets in upstate New York, and God assumes the shape of a man, do you not get hung up in those theological issues?

OSTEEN: I probably don’t get hung up in them because I haven’t really studied them or thought about them. And you know, I just try to let God be the judge of that. I mean, I don’t know.

I certainly can’t say that I agree with everything that I’ve heard about it, but from what I’ve heard from Mitt, when he says that Christ is his savior, to me that’s a common bond.

[From me]

Oh my.

How did I miss this one?  He said he hasn’t studied Mormonism.  Joel, then don’t say anything!  I’m sorry, but preach Jesus or don’t preach at all.  I get more cynical everyday.  Does the Bible matter anymore?  Or if you can put people in the pews is that what matters?  I love your positive outlook on life.  I think God can use you but take a stand!

What do you think?

Joel will take a stand as long as he can smile, be positive, and encouraging. The wrath of God seems to matter not. The destruction of Lot and his family, the death of the Egyptians in the Red River seems to matter not. The sheep and wolves story seem to matter not.

How shameful is that kind of “preaching.”

So as long as someone uses phrases that sound biblical, it’s acceptable to Joel? What a joke. This would be funny if it wasn’t so sad.

He smiles, says his degree is not in theology, and moves on to the next question. What amazes me is how he admits his ignorance of theological matters.

This is what is hurting the church. It’s become more appealing - and more lucrative - to be on man’s side than on God’s side.

I agree with Les that this would be funny if it wasn’t so sad. I also agree with you K. Don’t know? Don’t speak. I have trouble enough with Joel as it is. This makes it even harder

Do any preachers really agree with the way Olsen interprets the Word? Honestly, this guy gets more negative reactions from preachers, teachers, and even the lay individual in the church than anyone I know.

How is he still having such success?

Nothing more to add on Osteen. As far as Romney, I think his commitment to Mormonism may show him to be a family-oriented man and a man with conviction and morals. I think he is well-spoken; he would have stood up for traditional marriage; and, he would be an advocate for the rights of the unborn. I think he would have appointed conservative, like-minded judges to the Supreme Court. I also appreciate his knowlege of economics and what stimulates the market and small business. Despite his faith, I think I would have trusted him over McCain.

    Kevin,
I just have to cry about this one. Joel is “America’s” pastor, yet he spends no time studying theology. What a cop out statement that is. Everytime anyone speaks from a pulpit they are teaching the theology they have studied. What is worse is that his ignorance of the Bible is so apparent in the messages he presents and the answers he gives to interviewers.

To bad neither Mitt nor Joel will admit that the Christ of Mormonism is not the Christ of historic, orthodox Christianity. It is even possible that they may not know the difference either. What a horrific state of spiritual devolution we are slowly spiraling into.

JO may be popular and he may be “America’s pastor” as described above. If those statements are true, that doesn’t make his message any more valid. The only blessing that matters upon a ministry is God’s blessing, not what the country says or what book is at the top of the best selling list.

From my relationships, I’d say that most Christians and Mormons do not realize there is a difference between the beliefs. The conversations do end up being so similar it is difficult to see past the difference…as bill as tried to do.
The lack of theological education/drive to learn with Joel has always been a disappointment. Sitting in the stadium for service is just sad because the unity is not God focused in the congregation. If only he could have some serious wise counself, then how much this city could be focused on the real Christ.

I sincerely pray that Joel will be given a hunger to learn everything he can about theology. I really think it would make a difference in him. I also believe he would lose a lot of parishioners, but he has a tremendous voice for the Gospel that I think he is failing to use.
