Book Review–Starting From Scratch
I apologize to the publisher for this late review. I received this book before I resigned my last church and unfortunately everything from my office is in our crawl space under the house because my office is very small now.
I reviewed Patty Kirk’s first book Confessions of an Amateur Believer last year. It was a great book about her journey to faith. So when the publisher asked me to review her new book Starting from Scratch : Memoirs of a Wandering Cook I assumed it would be similar. I was wrong.
To be fair, this is a well written book it just wasn’t what I was expecting. It was stories of her childhood woven around her love for food. It is full of recipes and stories about her family. I guess it was going to be similar to her previous book and be about her faith. If you like family stories and want some recipes then you will like this book. If you are looking for a book about a journey in faith this is not for you.

Steve,
It is not a moped–it is a “2 wheel driving machine.”

Hi there, Kevin,
I have taken notice of your site ever since you reviewed Patty’s first book last year — she and I have the same publisher. I think she’s an outstanding writer, among the best I’ve ever read. In fact, I couldn’t put Starting from Scratch down, even though I’ve read only one other mostly secular book in the last eight years and even though I’m not much interested in cooking – her writing is that good!
Before I continue, let me say that I don’t mean to use this post as an advertisement – I tried to find a way to contact you, even calling the church linked to your web site (I got a fax machine) and then guessing at your email address (didn’t work). So forgive me for contacting you this way!
If you’re interested in reading another book about a woman’s journey to faith, with an eye towards reviewing it on your web site, I’d be happy to send you my recently released memoir, Heaven Without Her: A Desperate Daughter’s Search for the Heart of Her Mother’s Faith. It describes a long, painful and painstaking journey from feminist atheism all the way to born-again Christianity. And although my destination was determined primarily by a thorough study of the evidence for all the major religions …
(I think you’ll like this)
… it also included an absolutely transcendent moment at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, on the occasion of the Packer’s January, 1997 NFC championship game against the Caroline Panthers. (A clue: In 1993, the Packers had signed the great DE Reggie White.)
Please let me know if you’re interested in seeing this book.
Many blessings to you and your readers!
Kitty
