Safe Sex isn’t working…

Posted at 2:00 pm under abstinence, sex

[WCBS]

According to the study, 26 percent of city residents have the virus that causes genital herpes, an incurable sexually-transmitted infection that can cause painful genital sores and can double a person’s risk for HIV.

Nationally, 19 percent of the population has the infection, according to the department.

More specifically, the study showed that the rate is higher among women than men – 36 percent compared to 19 percent – and was higher among blacks than whites – 49 percent versus 14 percent, respectively.

It also found the rate was higher among gay men than heterosexual men – 32 percent compared to 18 percent.

“Genital herpes alone will not cause serious problems for most people,” said Dr. Julia Schillinger, Director of Surveillance for the Health Department’s Bureau of STD Prevention and Control and lead author of the study. “But some people will have painful genital sores and the infection fosters the spread of HIV. We advise New Yorkers to protect themselves and others. Using condoms consistently will help you avoid getting or spreading genital herpes.”

[From me]

What happened to safe sex?  There is no such thing unless one practices abstinence or monogamy. People claim to practice it but it isn’t happening.  Isn’t it interesting that if we followed what the Bible says about sex in a marriage relationship we wouldn’t see these problems.

What do you think?

The term “safe sex” is false advertising as far as I am concerned.

    Kevin,

I wholeheartily agree with your analysis/comments. But I’m also wondering how quick the comments will pile up on this post that abstinence and monogamy are unrealistic and naive. I will also ask that if people aren’t followers of Jesus, how can we expect them to follow the Bible’s teachings about abstinence/monogamy? I agree we should call them towards what the Bible teaches, but for those who don’t want to listen, there has to be other means to try to turn this around and so I don’t blame Dr. Julia Schillinger and her associates for putting this message out.

    Dr. Schillinger,

Don’t forget to strongly recomend the people to avoid the oral and the annal sex. Of course the comdon could help, but is not sufficient. I am a Latin American Medical Doctor and in my experience, the most incidence of disease, particularly the virus that causes genital herpes it is present in the mouth and in the rectum due to the bad sexual activity of the people.

    Rob,

That may be true, but the only way to prevent disease and pregnancies is abstinence. That should be taught 1st.

    Dr. Schillenger,

    Thanks for your insight.

    Quinn,

    True.

We know safe sex isn’t safe. We know the risks, we know the diseases, the problems of unwanted pregnacies, etc. Yet, our society continues to promote and proclaim the values of safe sex that don’t work! God must look down from heaven with an astonished look, wondering how we can be so foolish, dare I say stupid.

The world says that abstinence is unrealistic and naive. The world says Jesus Christ is a crutch that weak people need. They both are indeed working! The movement of abstinence and the Gospel is spreading around the globe and the media, no matter often they make it sound absurd, cannot stop it.

I believe that a heart change (salvation) results in a life change regarding life circumstances. God impacts people like no other message can. One person, one decision, one commitment at a time, God makes abstinence work even when the world is against it.

More blogs like this and I’m gonna start preaching!

God is making an impact on our youth andf their sexual decisions. Don’t buy the lie that He isn’t at work because you don’t see “Abstinence Is Best” in the headlines.

Twelve men spread the Gospel around the world successfully one person at a time. Pregnancy Centers are impacting our youth for the cause of Christ and for the cause of life one heart, one mind, one decision at a time. Atlanta Care Center has been around 26 years. That is a lot of changed lives. That is a lot of babies born. That is a lot of abstinence until marriage commitments. Pregnancy Centers across the nation are slowly changing the culture with Truth. We believe that God is the critical component in the abstinence message. It is less likely to work if it isn’t a spiritual decision.

I remember seeing a comic strip once (can’t remember which one) in which the young man said, “Gramps, what did your generation do with AIDS/HIV, unwanted babies, etc.” Gramps: stayed faithful to our wives and families.” Sort of simplistic but true. Stay faithful to our wives/husbands. Continue to teach abstinence (total) is still the best defense against pregnancy or STD.

Plus…we are dealing with the media here. how much of that can you trust?
