At Subway, no homeschoolers allowed?

Posted at 1:20 pm under Hypocrisy, homeschooling

[Subway]

At Subway you can “eat fresh” but you can’t enter a contest if you are a homeschooler. Look what they say in their contest here.

Contest is open only to legal US residents, over the age of 18 with children in either elementary, private or parochial schools that serve grades PreK-6. No home schools will be accepted.

What can I say?  Maybe they need to get some homeschoolers to proofread their website check out the disclaimer at the bottom of the page:

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. Contest is open only to legal residents of the Untied States who are currently over the age of 18 and have children who attend elementary, private or parochial schools that serve grades PreK-6. No home schools will be accepted.

Subway can’t even spell United!  So maybe homeschoolers are eligible in the United States just not the Untied States! :)

What do you think?

Someone else pointed this out to me this morning (of course I didn’t even notice the typo - funny). I’m disappointed but not surprised I guess.

We’ll probably choose Jimmy Johns or Quiznos now if we’re out and about looking for Subs. It would be one thing for them to just forget the homeschoolers … oh well…

Maybe Subway is just trying to make some kind of cryptic political commentary on the USA.

It does seem like a crazy rule when parents can help write it! Although the grand prize does fit an actual school better. I told my nephew, who is working on his story, about the Untied VS. United. He wants the sandwiches to wear shoes now in his story!
The radio station here has separate awards for homeschoolers and public school students. Guess we are an Untied area as well.

I’m a little tired of boycotts, seriously. If they’re giving $1000 worth of athletic equipment as a prize, it makes perfect sense to me to not give it to a homeschooler. I don’t see this as discrimination.

    Yes, we homeschool. :)

Let’s just move on. We’re not victims.

I prefer Chipotle’s Burrito bowl anyway. Too much bread at Subway. As for the issue: don’t think they are going to change their minds although perhaps they may need to use a proofer.

Quizons went out of business here again. Chipotle is in the big city - miles away. We enjoy a good Subway especially given the 5 buck footlong. In math that means - 4 six inchers when two footlongs are purchased. No harm as far as I’m concerned with this one.. Unless of course they’d rule out our homeschool academy. :)

Since I am going to the SBC this year, I may present a motion to boycott Subway like we did with Disney a few years ago. :) If Subway is going to discriminate against our homeschooled kids, we will find somewhere else to eat this summer while Stateside. That ought to teach ‘em a lesson!

I’m a homeschooler and I do think it is unfair to exclude us. I understand the prize is big, and I can see 2 reasons why they might have purposely excluded homeschoolers.

    - Probably thinking: If they allowed homeschoolers to enter for themselves, every family might try to enter even if they were not homeschoolers.

Solution: They could have had homeschoolers “prove” that they homeschool. Apple, Dell, and Adobe does this in order to get educational discounts on their products. You must show a receipt from curriculum that you’ve purchased, membership ID to the Homeschool Defense League, etc. to show that you are a legitimate homeschooler.

    - Probable thinking: They didn’t want a big prize going to one family.

Solution: They could have stipulated that homeschoolers are to give the prize to the local homeschool organization and not keep it for themselves. I know in my local area we have several homeschool sports leagues and co-ops. They desperately need sports equipment. It is not like they have the government funding to get it on their own. If my kid won the grand prize, I’d gladly give the grand prize to our sports group or co-op groups.

Scholastic is co-sponsor of this prize. I think that is insulting that an educational business such as Scholastic would exclude the homeschoolers. There may have been concerns about a family by itself winning suh a big prize but a little thought could have gone into it.
