What should I do?

Published by Kevin Bussey at 2:39 pm under friends, gas, help, money

The other day my good friend Rob from college called and we talked about life, family, church, Bama football, etc…  Then I told him I was thinking of buying a Scooter because gas has gone up to $3.79 a gallon.  Little did I know that he has a Honda Scooter sitting in his garage not being used.  It only has 200 miles on it and gets 120 miles to the gallon.  He has a motorcycle himself so he doesn’t use it.  He said I was welcome to use it if I went to North Alabama to pick it up.

So here is my dilemma, do I spend the gas money going to get an almost new Honda Scooter and drive it back to Charlotte?  My office is less than 4 miles from my home so I could probably go to work for a month for less than $10.  If I had to use my car, I’m close enough to drive back and get it.  Will driving a Scooter make me turn in my “man card?”  Or am I just being wise with God’s resources?

What do you think?

I don’t know K. First, I don’t see it as turning in your “man card.” I would probably turn it down for two reasons: wife and wife. No, not two wives. But my wife has pretty much said no to a Harley (I do have a HD general manager who attends the church) and two, she calls when I am out on my bicycle and the sirens go off. I would hate to think how many calls I would get if I am on one of those things! :) Plus, I am 6′5″ and I have this sneaking suspicion that I would like like a cowboy riding a miniature horse. That is a picture I don’t want to see! I will keep my Mitsubishi Outlander. However, free is sure hard to pass up. Happy deciding!

I bought a Prius about 3 months ago. We’re driving 800 miles or so a month and we were averaging over $200 a month in gas. Since we bought the Prius, we’ve averaged about 44 mpg so we’re spending something like $60 a month on gas now. So … considering what we paid for it, we’re getting a 8-10% return on what we paid for it. So that’s a no-brainer.

BUT .. the scooter … unless you can find someone headed that way, hitch a ride, and ride it back, it won’t pay. You’ll have to insure it, too, don’t forget. And man cards don’t put nothin’ on the table anyway.

    Bob,

I’d save the cost of the trip in one month. I’m barely getting 20-24 mpg in my Galant.

    Kevin,
If you are asking the question about turning in your man card, you have already turned in the man card.

Just kidding :-) . Become Scooterman!

Go for it. But make a road trip out of it to enjoy the day or long weekend there first.

I wish I lived closer to work to do something like that.

Turn in the man card, son. Sorry. Real men foot the bill even if it’s diesel for a dualie. Pay up or give it up.

    Sorry.

    :)

This one’s a no-brainer, Kev. Money not spent on gasoline is money that can be better used for God’s glory. Who cares about the man card?

I have restrained myself from responding, but I’ve got to do it. Its just to funny of a situation; especially the “man card” thing.

Dude get the scooter; let God make the man.

Kevin, you live four miles from work, and you aren’t riding your bicycle to work every day? Last week was bike to work week. You should start riding, bro. No insurance, no gas, and if you’re doing eight miles round trip, that’s an extra 1200-1500 calories a week burned. That’s a pound and a half every month. That scooter won’t help you do that.
    Ride your bike :>)

I’m serious about the helmet, by the way. A friend from my college group died in a motorcycle accident on the edge of the Baylor campus because he failed to wear one.

Kevin — Give up the “Man Card”. God is presenting a option that will help you be a good steward with what He has given you. Take the savings you’ll gain in gas, and take your bride out on dates in the car.

    Just my thoughts

Forget taken the bride in the car…take her on the scooter!!!

Here is the “word of the Lord” for you:

Take up jogging, and run to your office every day!

Hasn’t your man card been long gone? Go with the scooter.

I’m gonna trade in my bike 750 cc’s only gets in teh 30 mpgs

I’m going to go for a smaller motorcycle – less muscle, better mpg.

Scooter it up and wear a pink helmet.

Brother “G” would have a motorcyle if his wife “let” him… Now that you’ve brought up the whole scooter thing… lol

Speaking of scooters though.. We have a dear friend who has one. If he were a swearing man – he’d swear by it.
