Gov. Eliot Spitzer, the nationally known do-gooder who suffered a jaw-dropping fall from grace this week after being accused of frequenting a high-price call girl ring, announced his resignation Wednesday. In a short appearance before reporters, Spitzer said he had always demanded others take responsibility for their actions.

“I cannot and will not ask no less of myself,” he said. “For this reason, I am resigning from the office of governor.”

“For the past few days I have begun to atone for my private failings with my wife Silda, my children and my entire family. The remorse I feel will always be with me,” Spitzer said. “I cannot allow for my private failings to disrupt the people’s work.”

Spitzer, 48, said he was “deeply sorry I did not live up to what was expected of me,” and apologized to “every New Yorker.”

[From me]

I’m not here to dump on Mr. Spitzer.  This whole story is tragic.  Not because he had to resign as Governor but for his family.  He has a beautiful wife and 3 daughters.  How tough this must be on them.  It is bad enough he had an affair on his wife, but to spend $80,000 on prostitutes is unbelievable.  Think about the diseases his wife could get.  Think about how this will tear apart a family.  I wonder how Mrs. Spitzer is able to stand next to him during this tragedy?  I guess we never know until we are in a situation.  I will pray for their family.

I guess I missed the part about the $80,000! Oh my goodness!

I think that it is a case of too much money and not enough sense.

My wife told me yesterday that if that had happened to us, she would be devastated, but that her response to me would depend on my attitude of change and regret. If I vowed never to do it again, she said it would be easier (not easy) to forgive me, but that if I wasn’t willing to renounce, she wasn’t sure what would happen.

    $80,000 for prostitutes?!?

For that kind of coin, that had better be the best sex ever.

The 80,000 is just the start of the cost. Sex addiction never starts with hookers. That would be like learning how to swim by deep sea diving in an underwater cave.

I wrote about it too on my site, but I approached it from the angle of what was the lie that got Spitzer in the end.

I think the amount of money he spent was not to have high priced sex. I think it was to obtain women who would be out of the price range of disease riddled lower and middle class men. This plays to the belief that rich people don’t get diseases like AIDS, and, therefore, having sex with high priced prostitutes reduces exposure to STD’s.

Nevertheless, he has obviously devastated his wife, and, especially, his daughters. He has no moral authority whatsoever, and that is often the only true lever a father has with his children. If he truly repents and complete turns away from this, then he may have a chance. However, he has a long and painful road ahead of him.
