“Christian?” groups take battle to court

[From Montgomery Advertiser]

Two well-known Alabama Christian groups are headed toward judgment — in Montgomery County Circuit Court. The former head of the Christian Coalition of Alabama calls the lawsuit filed against him by the current head of the organization “frivolous and baseless.” Dr. Randy Brinson, who now heads the organization, has filed suit against John Giles, who led the CCA for eight years and resigned last year. Giles was served with the complaint late Thursday.

Well, I guess they didn’t read the Bible that says in I Corinthians 6:1-2

If any of you has a dispute with another, dare he take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the saints? Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases?

How can this lawsuit glorify God? Please take the name Christian out of your name because this isn’t the way Jesus Christ would have responded. This is why politics and Jesus don’t mix.

What do you think?

As I read it, that means that if you do have a lawsuit, you must first ask the religious views or lack thereof, of the presiding judge??

Kevin: You are right on! I worry about the money that will be wasted through this and especially the bad press Christians will get because of it.

I’m not very comfortable with the use of I Corinthians 6 here. I doubt there is a First Baptist Church in the entire south that doesn’t have a Circuit Judge serving as a deacon there. I have a hard time calling a brother “the ungodly”.

I also wonder this. Since the early 80’s I’ve heard brothers from Dobson on down telling me that the nation was founded on Christian principles. If so, then isn’t our legal system also built on Christian principles? I’m not sure if the new testament Roman courts are the same as our US courts.

The overall point that Christians should get along is well made though. Alabama seems to be a hotbed for contentious believers.

I think a consistent Christian Ethic requires that we (as individual followers of Christ) should sue only as a last resort. Unfortunately, we’re often left with no other option.

But I have a problem categorizing a lawsuit and its parties as unChristian or unGodly (though that wasn’t said explicitly). Every decent size church in America likely has half a dozen lawyers as members and maybe even a judge or two. What they do is a public service (in many cases). As Christians, we should seek to adopt a consistent Christian Ethic and hire ethical lawyers (and they do exist!!!)
