Smoking gets an “R” rating!

[From Washington Post]

Would “Casablanca” have been rated XXX?

Depictions of smoking in movies will now be a factor when deciding what a film’s rating will be, possibly making a PG-13 movie R-rated, the Motion Picture Association of America said yesterday. The policy affects only new movies.

Along with violence, depictions of sex, adult language and other content considerations, ratings organizations will examine new releases to determine if they glamorize smoking or if it is pervasive through the films, even among adults. Underage smoking has always been considered when rating a film.

Read about it here.

[From me]

I certainly don’t like smoking. It kills people and is a bad habit. But you have to be kidding me! So if a movie like Atlantis shows that lady saying “we’re all going to die” with the cig in her mouth it gets an “R” rating?

Why don’t they go after the real ills of our country like immoral sexual content and perversion? Hollywood just doesn’t get it.

What do you think?

Great point Kevin. It seems like no one cares about the things that REALLY matter and REALLY need to be fixed in our society today. To me, it seems like the MPAA should be more concerned with finding a new “rating letter” for movies such as Brokeback Mountain and other movies that fall into that category. Keep up the good work man, I enjoy reading your blog daily.

I seemto recall that the Bible forbids anything which may pollute the temple of the Holy Ghost, so, in a sense, smoking would be akin to sexual immorality, no?

    Zach,

    Thanks for stopping by.

I can’t believe that Andy Griffith and Barney will be “R” rated.

Check out “This Movie Has Not Yet Been Rated.” The MPAA is a scam and a sham. This doesn’t even make the top 100 list of things to be angry with the MPAA about.

On the other hand, I sort of agree with this in concept (though I do not approve of rating in general). Tobacco is a dangerous drug. It is absolutely deadly compared to other drugs, it is extremely addictive, and worst of all it is legally pushed by multi billion dollar corporations. I think it is perfectly consistent and logical that depictions of tobacco use should be treated the same as heroin or crack. If it seems peculiar, perhaps it is actually due to the gross inconsistency of our drug policy.

Yep, the way they rant on about the opiates, one would be pardoned for thinking that ciggies don’t really matter. There are over 400 horrible, horrible chemicals in them. I am not normally a litigious person, but I would support anyone suing the mongrels for withholding the facts for so many years, making zillions, and killing people in the process.

Ciggies are to lungs what McDonald’s is to stomachs. LETHAL!!!!

Cigarettes never keep anyone out of heaven…. although they might get them there faster. Am I advocating smoke-em? No.

I like McDonalds, I like Micheloeb Ultra and I like Kool Mild 100’s in a box and I love Jesus. I am fat, but it’s certainly not because of McDonalds. Probably genetic. Do I chain smoke, no. I do however enjoy smoking a pack a week. Am I an alcoholic, no. I might drink a beer occasionally. I do not drink in excess but even if I did get drunk, that is not always a bad thing.

Give strong drink to him who is perishing,
And wine to those who are bitter of heart.
Let him drink and forget his poverty,
And remember his misery no more. Proverbs 31:6-7

I like iced tea too, but the carcinogenic chemicals released into the blood when it is consumed could make tea a controlled substance too under those guidelines. Coca-Cola…not exactly healthy to consume but it will clean your car battery terminals and degrease your engine!

Does this stumble you? One could piously state that we’re to abstain from the meat offerred to idols…

I think God is more concerned with the heart than what a man consumes.

    Matthew 15
    Defilement Comes from Within
1 Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying, 2 “Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.”
3 He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? 4 For God commanded, saying, ‘Honor your father and your mother’;[a] and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’[b] 5 But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God”— 6 then he need not honor his father or mother.’[c] Thus you have made the commandment[d] of God of no effect by your tradition. 7 Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:
8 ‘ These people draw near to Me with their mouth,
    And[e]honor Me with their lips,
But their heart is far from Me.
9 And in vain they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”[f]

10 When He had called the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear and understand: 11 Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.”
12 Then His disciples came and said to Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?”
13 But He answered and said, “Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. 14 Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.”
15 Then Peter answered and said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.”
16 So Jesus said, “Are you also still without understanding? 17 Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated? 18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. 20 These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.”

The eternal is more important than a body that is going to die no matter what you do. A Country Singer once sang, ‘Stay Fit, Eat Right, Die anyway!’
