Kicked out of college for attending a “4 Him” Concert

Posted at 4:30 pm under Christian, amazing, colleges, legalism

[From Christian Post]

Chris Sligh who was booted from American Idol this week admitted he was kicked out of the Christian fundamentalist college, Bob Jones University, for attending a contemporary Christian concert featuring the group 4Him.

Read about it here.

[From me]

Wow! You know how wild those 4 Him Concerts are. Good thing he didn’t get caught attending an Evie concert. I went to see Molly Hatchet and 38 Special when I was in high school I guess that is why I didn’t get a scholarship to BJU.

What other concerts might have gotten him kicked out?

You’ve Got to be Kidding…a 4Him concert! Oh brother.
Well obviously Point of Grace would have to be on that list since they did tour together. But lets have fun with some more intense ones.
    Embodyment
    Skillet
    Project 86
    7th Avenue
    As I lay Dying
    Disciple
And to feel old: Stryper and Whitecross

Kevin: I was raised in a church that supported and promoted BJU vigorously. Yep I believe it.

    Debbie,

    I didn’t know Wade promoted BJU. :)

I guess listening to “One Bad Pig” (early 90’s Heavy Metal Christian band) with Johnny Cash on backup vocals for their song “Man in Black” would not endear me to BJU.

Kevin, you related to Bill “Bubba” Bussey of B’ham?

    Bob,

Not that I know of. Most of the Busseys on my Dad’s side live in Arkansas and KC, MO.

Kevin, how funny! Back when we lived in Utah (1987) and attended a little independent Baptist church, I was cautioned by one of the church leaders after singing a solo of a song by CCM group Truth. I was told not to sing anymore rock songs. Some weeks later I was cautioned again after singing “Come and See” by Steve Green.

Another concert that might have gotten him kicked out would be Wayne Watson.

    FP,

Truth and Steve Green? Man you were living on the wild side! ;)

As a classically trained pianist, raised in a similar environment, I cannot resist the glaring double standard. Going to any concert featuring the music of that notorious womanizer, Franz Liszt (who also produced some of the most dazzling and at times ravishing music ever) should be enough to evict their entire music department. Liszt, Chopin, Mozart, and virtually every other composer were the rock stars of their day and lived lascivious lives. Any musician studying their works (such as myself) should also be excommunicated from the school.

At least inter-racial dating is OK at BJU from what I understand :) CBB

The first time I held hands with a boy was at a Michael W. Smith concert. He took me to see Jars of Clay a few weeks later. I don’t know what BJU would have liked less: that we saw those heathens in concert, or that we went on dates.

Try Ted Nugent and 38. Special also Night Ranger & Ratt, but I saw the error of my ways and went to see Thousand Foot Crutch and Reliant K.

I’m guessing they would really appreciate some Toby Mac!!!

I just thankful that by the grace of God, I am no longer on Highway to Hell. :)

Is Gold City or the Imperials on the BJU hit list?

seems to me that for sure a U2 concert would work!

You don’t have to be a narrow-minded, intolerant BJU administrator to find Ted N. offensive. This narrow-minded, intolerant heathen also find him utterly reprehensible. Never heard his music, tho…

Mark Harris (with 4Him) was my roommate at Lee during a summer term many years ago…Yep, MARK is a Lee University graduate too.

    Great guy.

And I’d believe just about anything coming out of Bob Jones.

Oh my gosh! What kind of mother am I? You see, I’ve actually taken my kids to see Toby Mac, Jars of Clay, Third Day, Jeremy Camp, Audio Adrenaline, and more. I’m afraid BJU would probably lynch me. Or maybe make me their poster child for Bad Parenting. ;-)

It’s a shame. I had a good friend of mine in a Christian Bible College in Mississippi studying to go into the ministry back in the late 70’s or early 80’s. The school had an annual “Maypole” celebration. He thought it was somewhat odd that a Christian Bible College would conduct a pagan fertility ceremony.

So he and a few of the guys staged a protest. They dressed like pimps in long fur coats, really slick hats with big Elton John glasses. (come on it was the 70’s. They didn’t have any FUBU) One carried a boom box the size of a suitcase on one of the guys shoulders playing “Hot Stuff” by the Pointer Sisters. Yup, you guessed it, they got kicked out.

It probably would have gotten them kicked out of Bob Jones University too.

I admired the stand they took.

Too bad my good friend however soured so much on Christianity, he became a Buddhist. Pray for David.
